Ski Touring. England and Wales

Skiing the mountains of England and Wales.

On those rare days when the English or Welsh hills are in condition, the skiing is special. To be fair, sometimes a little too special but that's part of the fun and skiing my home hills and mountains is always a treat.

During the coming Winter seasons I'm planning to organise short notice ski touring in the English and Welsh mountains for like minded skiers, conditions depending.

"Snowdonia" In recents years the ski touring on the Carneddau range in Snowdonia has provided some excellent day touring. When snow and avalanche conditions allow there are steeper lines including y-garn and gullies in Cwm Lloer.
'Lake District' The fells around Helvellyn offer excellent day touring options and the line from Helvellyn to Red Tarn is true English steep skiing.
'Shropshire' My local hills are in condition most years and have even served up powder days. The area around the Long Mynd, particually the Lawley is a good bet, while The Wrekin often gives 'pisted' conditions on the main path as walkers pack down the snow.

No Fee. Currently offered on a 'peer' basis.

Where and when?

It's going to depend on weather and conditions. If you are interested contact me in advance.

What kit do I need ?

Ideally the usual ski touring kit on 'rock skis'. For Shropshire you can get away with 'boot packing' up with normal alpine gear, again old rock skis are a good idea. Transceiver, Shovel and Probe should be carried too.

What Level ?

Although the skiing can be brilliant, there is often a long walk to the snow line, so a good level of fitness will be required. The skiing will likely include very thin snowpack complete with rocks, grass and heather. It isn't easy but there is fun to be had with the right attitude.
